Mini Laptops, Who Should Consider Owning One?

There are many benefits to owning a laptop, especially for those who are regularly on the move and need information, documents, internet access and a wide variety of other applications with them while they travel.

Mini laptops are particularly useful due to their even more compact size and are ideal for business people and students, while a regular sized laptop will likely be slightly more powerful do you really need all that memory? For some of course the answer will be yes, if you are into gaming on your laptop for example then a more powerful laptop is obviously more desirable to allow your games to run more smoothly. The vast majority of people however do not need so much memory, for those who need a laptop only for carrying documents and projects for instance it would be frugal to invest in a cheaper mini laptop that will have all the capability that you need.

This is particularly useful to know as a student, you likely do not have a great deal of money to spend on a laptop for use in your study so a purchase of a smaller model that will not only do the job quite sufficiently but will also save you around 20% of the cost of a larger, similar model so it would be wise to make this consideration.

The size of course will be the biggest selling point for many, mini laptops are perfect for those who commute, fly or even walk to their place of work or study. They are far easier to store in a small locker in places such as airports and train stations where a regular laptop may not fit or they can also be placed into a case/satchel which makes them far easier to bring with you on your journey. Add to this the fact that they cut down on weight in your baggage and any regular traveler will see why this would be beneficial.

The one downside of course is also the size, those who have problems with their eyesight may do well to steer clear of the laptops smaller cousin as might those who also like to watch movies using their laptop while on the move.

Although mini laptops are a great accessory it is best to take things like the above into account before you make any purchases as a laptop that is of no real use to you is a waste of your resources when you could have made the right choice the first time.

Factors such as the screen size, hard drive space, operating system and battery life are something worth looking at while choosing a mini-notebook or laptop. Every factor has its respective pros and cons. So you need to compare the factors and choose the one that perfectly fits your needs.

The screen size range from 8.9 to 10.2 inches. You could choose from the traditional hard drive or the solid state drive. As far as the operating system goes, you have the option of Windows XP or Linux and the battery could be either 4 cell or 6 cell.

Your choice depends on your usage. The more you use your laptop, the better the storage and battery life should be. Again the operating system chosen should be compatible with most programs in the consumer market. With a little bit of research, you can choose the right kind of mini notebook for you.

Mini Laptop - Your Best Traveling Companion

If you travel a lot on business and don't like to hold back your work while traveling, you must get a mini laptop which gives you the convenience of working on the go. It's like having your personal computer in your briefcase or purse. Just pull it out and its business as usual.

The best part is that mini laptops are very reasonably priced. You can get the convenience of a standard laptop at less than half its price. Mini notebooks range from $200-$500 where as standard laptops can cost you anywhere from $600-$1500.

So if you think it's only you who has lost weight this summer to flaunt your body for the beach season, then look around and see how the genre of personal computers have slimmed-down to almost size-zero. The mini notebook is indeed a revolution in the computing industry and at unbelievable low prices.

You can call them mini laptops, mini notebooks, mini notes, mobile internet devices or netbooks. Call them whatever you like, but these amazing breed of lightweight and compact personal computers are surely taking the world by storm.

The only reason they are so sleek and compact is because they are stripped of all extraneous features and they are a naked-version of the standard laptop. The price range starts from $299 and can go up to $500, but the most expensive netbook is the Sony Vaio P series priced around $1,200.

But there is no need to spend so much on mini laptops when you can get everything under $500 or so. It's important you look into the features before buying a mini notebook. Just because they are sleek and trendy-looking does not mean they will satisfy your requirements.

For instance, the display screen should be wide enough to give you a better view. You may get a 7 inch screen but what's the point if you have to really try hard to see what's on display. Also the hard drive space plays an important role if you have large data to store and backup.

If you are a frequent traveler and like to do business on your laptop while traveling, it's not only important to consider the weight and the portability of the device, it's also essential to look into its configuration that will take care of all your business needs.

Mini notebooks support many operating systems. Make sure you choose the one that is compatible with most software programs in the market. For example, a Windows XP operating system is the best for most computer users. Also you must consider the keyboard space for convenient typing. Some netbook keyboards are way too compact making it a difficult and clumsy task.

Most netbooks offer extras such as USB ports, media slots, built-in camera, microphones, Wi-Fi, speakers and many other perks. So choose the one that gives you maximum benefit at a reasonable price.

Some Information About Mini Laptop Computers

As the years go by, our electronic gadgets keep getting either much smaller or much larger. Computers and cell phones top the list of things growing smaller while our televisions and cars seem to be getting bigger. Our convenient new mini laptop computers make it so much easier to do our jobs, our schoolwork or anything else we want to do while on the go.

These laptops are used by people who are in business, in school and in the arts. Business people use them to communicate while on the go, students use them to do research and take notes while in school and parents enjoy spending time in the park with their children while still getting some work done.

The latest technology is included in many of the laptops offered in department stores everywhere. Most of the very small laptops do not have any kind of CD or DVD drive. The body of these tiny laptops is too small to hold one.

The smaller laptops are called netbooks. This is because they are made so that the user can connect to the Internet and download information that they would normally receive from a CD. Today, we have the good fortune of using flash drives, which is the latest invention for storing information from a computer. Easy to use, these little storage devices plug into a USB port and are much more durable than CDs. They cannot be scratched like a CD but they can be smashed or broken and if they get wet, a lot of valuable information could be lost. They have storage capacities that are equal to most CDs.

Most laptops, regardless of size, will come with a slot for external speakers and a microphone. Newer models often have webcams directly installed in the top of the monitor so that while someone is using the computer, the camera stays focused on them.

The battery life on one of these smaller laptops is usually several hours. However, the more screens are open on the screen, the less battery time you will have. It is best to use small laptops plugged in if possible and only rarely used with battery only. This way the battery does not get worn down and will still work when it is really needed.

Many people prefer to use mini laptop computers because they are easy to transport due to their light weight. The price depends on the features that are included and where it is being bought. They are not hard to find today, as many people rely on them for their everyday business.

Portable Mini Laptops - Travelling With Netbooks

Portable mini laptops are perfect for when on the move, they're small and light, allow you to connect to the internet, your email, social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace, use simple applications as well as light entertainment such as videos and games. They are the best, cheapest, travel laptops.

Of course, you do have the option of a 3G mobile phone, but they lack the QWERTY keyboard and larger screen so your experience may well be compromised. Yes, a phone can fit in your back-pocket, but a netbook is only around the size of a book, and don't most of us carry some sort of bag with us when we travel?

A great advantage of netbooks is the weight. Perhaps you're reading this now on a laptop or you've just come home from work having carried a laptop around with you all day. Lift it up, feel it. Do you need all that bulk and extra weight? Perhaps your laptop is getting old anyway; could you downsize? Do you use your laptop for anything more than email, surfing the internet and performing simple applications like PowerPoint and Word?

When travelling this becomes so much more important; particularly on public transport. Those who take trains regularly must appreciate the hassles of opening up a laptop and packing it away, especially in crowded conditions. Book-sized portable mini laptops are a dream.

And then there's flying. Those of us savvy economy class passengers who are pressed together in seating with 30-32 inches of room from seatback to seatback must know what using a laptop is like - and the pain when the person in front reclines.

Recent surveys suggest 92% of business travelers and 51% of leisure travelers take a laptop with them. - according to The Travel Insider

Airlines have already recognized the need for connectivity up front, although only in recent years have economy class cabins begun to feature laptop friendly seating. Examples such as Singapore Airlines and Emirates are introducing slimline seating which gives a few inches more legroom and workspace. Other features include powerports under the seats and in-flight connectivity.

Powerports aren't always necessary however. Most of the newer Eee PC models like the Eee PC 901 and Eee PC 1000 come with 6-cell batteries which can provide for 5-8 hours of battery life. As a result, you don't need to faff around with power cables or even bother bringing a powercable with you. You can literally just slip it in and out of your bag and be online in seconds.

Mini Laptop Computers - What You Need to Look For

Mini Laptops or Netbooks have been becoming more popular the last few years. So Is a Mini Laptop right for you and how do you decide which one. If you are a student, a person that's on the go or you travel a lot you might want to look at getting one. Most run a little over 1 pound to around 3pounds with screen sizes from 7 to 10inches.

They are relatively inexpensive, light weight and very convenient. With smaller screens and less memory they are not meant for the gamer and you can't run your larger programs on them. But they are great if you need to keep in touch on line. You can stay connect, write papers, do research, email, web conference , and work on your projects.
One of the first things you need to look at is the keyboards. Some have better quality then others and the layout can differ from one to the other. Some have very small keys while other have try to keep the keys as big as possible by eliminating the function keys. Some of the less expensive ones have o one piece layover keyboard which if you're not use to can be hard to work with till you get use to it.

The screen size is something else to look in to. This is not a screen you will want to spend looking for hours and days in a row. Some of the smaller one you don't get to see the whole web page on and it can be inconvenient scrolling around to see the whole screen. One other thing I notice is that some have very glossy screens and that can be hard to work with is some places.

Battery size and life are important to check into also, most mini laptops come with a 3 cell battery which can run out in 2-3 hours. The good thing is that almost all can be upgraded to a 6 cell, and some are coming with longer life batteries now. A bonus some of the 6-cell is that it also props your mini up a little which makes it a little easier to use the keyboard and also helps with air circulation. But don't forget it will also add more weight.

Most Mini laptops come with 160GB hard drives and 1GB DDR2 Memory though some come with less and some are starting to come with more. Dell has a 12 inch screen one that comes with an 80GB hard drive and Gateway has 11.6 inch screen with 2GB DDR2 and 25oGB hard drive. It all depends on how small you want to go and how much you want to spend.

Most Mini Laptops have a fair amount of features but a lot of them don't come with your typical programs loaded and most do not come with Cd rom drives. There is really great programs you can down load for free so unless you have to have a certain program this doesn't need to be a factor in your decision.

The newest addition to the Mini Laptop world are ones like The Verizon HP Mini 1151NR Notebook that is being advertised at $199.00 at the time of this article but there's a catch, you have to sign a 2 year contract with Verizon with cost between $39 and 79. I have a feeling it won't be long before the other company's follow suit. There is some out there that offer their services but they are not required for the purchase price.

Though these little verse of the laptop are not good for everyone they are a real life saver for some. With lower cost they even work as your only computer if you just need to stay to touch with the world and have light computing needs.

Is a Mini Laptop the Best Computer For Me?

Mini laptop computers are very convenient for students, commuters, travelers and for other busy people on the go. They are lightweight and relatively inexpensive, as well as being highly portable. However, when it comes to choosing your next computer you may be asking yourself whether a mini laptop is the best computer for me?

To answer that question, you really need to think carefully and thoroughly about what you are going to use your computer for. If you are on the go a lot and would like to look up your email or do some light word processing, a netbook computer can come in very handy. If you commute to work every day on the train, having a small, lightweight computer makes it easy to get a head start on your work, or you can do a little web surfing. If you travel, a lightweight mini laptop will be very convenient with the strict luggage restrictions that airports have these days. Students will also love having a lightweight netbook to carry from class to class for taking notes and working on their class assignments while on campus.

Mini laptops do have smaller keyboards and screens and are also not meant to be used for doing a lot of online gaming or multimedia activities. If these are things that are important to you, you may be better off with a standard laptop or desktop computer.

The keyboards and screen sizes for netbook computers have evolved to the point where there is not a lot of difference between them and a standard laptop. Mini Laptops - Size Does Matter

This time and age is proving that size really does matter, and the smaller, the better. Technology has been improving so much that soon, bulkiness will be a thing of the past. Traveling is so convenient when you don't have to bring along big computers, and you don't have to resort to renting outdated computers or having to lug around big PC's just to do your work. Most of all, these netbook notebooks virtually have the same processors as the PC's, and their speed are similar to the normal laptop, all contained within a 10 inches of space (and probably even smaller!).

Many would like to use the mini laptops simply for doing work while traveling. Asus EEE is one of the most famous miniature laptops that hit the market, and has continued to improve over time. It generally comes with a Linux OS, which may intimidate some of the users, but are generally easy to use. Besides, you have the option to switch into another OS, say, Windows Vista. This brand is one of the widely-known portable mini laptops that the market continues to rely on. They also recently released a Tablet version, where you can turn the monitor around for easier work.

MSI Wind is another one of the commonly-known mini laptops out there. It's famous for balancing both the size-cute and small without being too inconvenient when it comes to the keyboards-while also running fast in its Intel processor. It usually comes pre-installed with Windows XP or Vista, which makes it one of the primary choices. It's perfect for travel, since it comes with a card reader and 3 USB ports, making file-transfer easier.

Recently, other well-known laptop companies are getting into the race. They've taken their laptops and reformed them, making them smaller but better-equipped for the traveling worker. HP has just finished releasing the Mini-Note PC, which is a small version of their bigger laptop, and is small in its 9 inch display. One of the leading laptop brands Toshiba has also released their own mini laptop, and also within the 10 inch display limit. The great thing about this brand is that the touchpad hasn't been compromised; instead, you'll be able to continue using it as you would your normal laptop without adjusting and eventually hurting your wrists.

Nowadays, mini laptops and netbooks are being sold at a lower price, even lower than what you'd expect from the normal-sized laptops. If you're only using your laptop for display, or to do some customary work while traveling, then you might be better off with one of these babies. They'll make sure you stay ahead, especially since they usually have VGA or DVI ports you can hook to external monitor displays such as LCD's or HDTV's. A mini laptop will surely help you optimize your productivity if you live an on-the-go lifestyle!

Mini Laptop Bags

The mini laptop is the new trend in personal computing. To be able to travel anywhere in the world and yet still have all of your music, movies and games with you, and also still be able to communicate with the world at the push of a few buttons is such an amazing advancement for humanity. The mini laptop is also environmentally friendly because it means no more need for creating millions of CDs and DVDs of music and games. Instead, everyone can just download the content needed without any extra resources being used. Now what about protecting the mini laptop while traveling? That question is often a neglected one, with most of the energy and time put into researching the computer itself and not the laptop bag. It is very important to make sure your new mini laptop is properly protected from bumps and bruises, as well as spills and inclement weather.

Most padded laptop bags are meant for full size laptops up to either 15.4 inches or even up to 17 inches in some cases. Now putting a 13 inch mini into a laptop bag meant for a 15.4 inch laptop might be ok, but the 8.9 inch mini won't be so lucky. Four Reasons Why You Should Choose a Mini Laptop Computer

They're many options available to you when you're in the market for a laptop computer. For instance, you can purchase a regular laptop or a mini laptop computer. However, more people are opting for the mini laptop. These laptops are beginning to be quite a phenomenon. The mini laptop can be just as powerful as the regular sized one. Here are 4 reasons why you should consider getting a mini notebook computer.

1) The first reason is the most obvious. Many people get a mini PC because it is lightweight and easy to carry around. In fact, they weigh about two pounds and they can easily fit in a book bag, briefcase, or a handbag. In addition, you can put them in their very own special carrying case. You can take them anywhere with you and they're so light that you might not even notice that they're there.

2) The second reason could've been the first, but price is also a good reason to stick with a mini notebook computer. Although a mini has the same features as a regular laptop, the price is considerably less; the reason for this is the size of the screen. However, it's totally up to you, if a 10 inch screen is not your thing, you might want to stick with the regular laptop which can have a screen size of up to 17 inches and in some cases more. You can get a good mini laptop in the price range of $200 to $500. On the other hand, a regular sized laptop can run you $600 to $2000 and up in some cases.

3) Handheld devices are also becoming pretty popular in their own right. However, a mini laptop comes with a lot more features and power than your average hand held device. Unlike a hand held, you can have up to three USB ports with a mini notebook; they're also equipped with Wi-Fi capabilities for wireless internet connection.

These machines are also equipped with processors that are fast and powerful. In addition, they come equipped with a lot more memory. Mini laptop computers come with really good operating systems along with preinstalled software programs. You will also have a lot more room for expansion in the future with a notebook computer than you would with a hand held device.

4) As I mentioned earlier, mini laptop computers come with operating systems already installed. Therefore, they can run the many different and popular operating systems such as Linux, Ubuntu, Mac, and of course the all popular Microsoft operating systems like Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7.

Hopefully I was able to convince you that choosing a mini PC over the regular laptop computer is worth taking a look at. Another thing to remember is that the memory and hard drive is also comparable to the regular laptop also.

Top Ten Mini Laptops

Our latest Top Ten Mini Laptops as of May 2009. Once again we've trawled through dozens of our own and other peoples reviews and tried out the models and drawn our conclusions. We've based our results on practicality, functionality, cost and looks.

This month has seen the departure of several models from our Top Ten Mini Laptops rankings, as newer models come out. These include:

Dell Inspiron Mini 9

The original Dell netbook whilst small and compact was a compromised netbook, lacking the function keys, offering limited battery life, colour choice and storage and so it has exited our Top Ten Mini Laptops rankings this month. However, the new larger Inspiron Mini 10 solves some of these problems. We've yet to review it, but on the face of it they've sorted out the keyboard, which is incidentally quite large and some other problems.

The Dell Inspiron Mini 9 remains very good value on a Vodafone contract however, from around £20 per month. Consider separating the bundle and buying an Inspiron Mini 9 and USB modem contract separately and you would be spending around £30 more in total. Definetly worth a look...

Asus Eee PC 1000

Asus introduced the Eee PC 1000 after MSI brought out the first 10 inch netbook, the MSI Wind. With it's brother, the Eee PC 901 they introduced a whole range of new features to the successful Eee PC range including large 6-cell batteries as standard and the now industry standard Intel Atom 1.6GHz N270 processor.

However, as larger brands have put together there netbook offerings, the big Asus netbook has slid down the tables. Asus have updated the model bringing out the Asus Eee PC 1000H, Eee PC1002HA and gorgeous variant - the Eee PC S101.

MSI Wind

The MSI Wind although loved by some has exited our rankings for two simple reasons. Firstly, there are now bigger brands with better products such as the Samsung NC10. Secondly, even if you did want to buy an MSI Wind you'd be wasting your money buying one. Why? Because you can buy an Advent 4211 instead! It's the same computer, with different logos, but about £50 cheaper depending on where you buy. Even then, you'd be losing out. The new LG X110 is not in fact that new - it's a restyled version of the MSI Wind which looks quite attractive. It also comes with 3G embedded.

So here we arrive at the Top Ten Mini Laptops Rankings... starting at the bottom:

#10 - Asus Eee PC 701

The first netbook unveiled by Asus at COMPUTEX Taipei in 2007, which kicked off this entire industry trend, has once again reappeared in our rankings. Yes, it isn't as powerful as newer models, yes it does have a smaller screen and yes it does cost up to half the price of the newer models. True to its netbook routes, it is still one of the smallest, cheapest and lightest netbook.

If you were considering going for a budget mini laptop (fair enough during harsh economic times!) there are some unbranded models. But it's always worth buying branded particularly with computers since you can take advantage of the after sales support network. For what it is, the Asus Eee PC 701 is still a bargain!

Overall: 2 stars - previous ranking February 09: Back in the Top Ten Mini Laptops rankings!

#9 - Asus Eee PC S101

Although we've previously ranked this netbook quite highly, Cnet still ranks it highly at their #3, but under it's delicious skin there's not very much there, especially for the price they're asking - £449. On closer inspection there's a derated battery - 4-cell instead of 6 like it more functionable brothers or not integrated 3G option like on the Eee PC 901. At about twice the price of similar spec, yet more powerful models it's harder to justify a higher ranking anymore.

Overall: 3 stars - previous ranking February 09: #6

#8 - Toshiba NB100

The Toshiba mini laptop has climbed the rankings thanks to some incredible price cuts. The Editor has found Amazon.co.uk shaved £50 off the £299 RRP, with LaptopsDirect cutting a further £50 off that during April in a clearance sale. The computer isn't as good as some competitors such as the Asus Eee PC 901, but the build quality is pretty solid and the brand holds a lot in its name so we consider it a safe buy.

Toshiba have also unveiled plans for a larger 10 inch model boasting 160GB of storage and 3G embedded. See New Mini Laptops

Overall: 3 stars - previous ranking February 09: #10

#7 - LG X110

This pretty new laptop is infact based upon the pioneering 10 inch laptop, the MSI Wind. The corners have been rounded off to give quite an attractive chassis, and the price tag isn't too bad either. The addition of integrated 3G allows for connectivity wherever you can get mobile phone signal, not yet available on competing models such as the HP Compaq mini 700 or Samsung NC10.

Overall: 3 stars - previous ranking February 09: New ranking in this months Top Ten Mini Laptops, but the MSI Wind hit #9

#6 - Acer Aspire One

The Acer Aspire One family has grown to include the new D150 10 inch netbook. We've decided to merge the two for the sake of rankings. The price range for new model is similarly good value to its smaller brother, significantly cheaper than the £300 odd you'd expect to pay for the very latest netbook.

Despite the addition to the range, the Acer has slipped slightly down the rankings as newer and better models enter the Top Ten Mini Laptops rankings.

Overall: 3 stars - previous ranking February 09: #5

#5 - Asus Eee PC 901

The Asus Eee PC 901 is a truly complete netbook. It replaced Asus' earlier 9 inch models, the Eee PC 900 series introducing 6-cell batteries and Intel Atom processors as standard. Now available for FREE on contract with Orange in a variety of colours the options are vast. We consider it the best 9 inch portable mini laptop.

At the time of writing, the Asus Eee PC is available for around £25 per month on Orange Pay Month Mobile Broadband.

Overall: 4 stars - previous ranking February 09: #4

#4 - Asus Eee PC 1002HA

The top end of the Asus Eee PC range comes in the shape of the Eee PC 1002HA. Complete with a restyled chassis with inspiration taken from the seductively sleek Eee PC S101 and the insides of the Eee PC 1000H. Unfortunately, they've stopped a hairs breath away from making something quite amazing by failing to offer the 6-cell battery as standard like the earlier Eee PC 901/1000 models. None the less it hit's #4 in our Top Ten Mini Laptops rankings - a new entry.

Overall: 4 stars - previous ranking February 09: New ranking!

#3 - Samsung NC10

Samsungs low-key entry into the netbook world has been met with overwhelming sales success. The keyboard, crafted to make the letter keys larger and the number keys smaller to help with typing is almost a match for an HP netbook. Recently, O2 have partnered up with Samsung to offer a range of laptops on mobile broadband contract including the NC10. O2 offers one of the better networks, with it being the sole provider for the infamous Apple iPhone in the UK. As well as providing an excellent network, they also offer free Home Broadband for mobile broadband customers.

Samsungs confidence in netbooks has become overwhelming, with the larger Samsung NC20 now available and more models unveiled and waiting in the pipeline. See mini-laptops-and-notebooks.com and click on 'New Mini Laptops' for details including pictures!

#2 - HP Compaq Mini 700

Not shifting from last months Top Ten Mini Laptops is the HP Compaq mini 700 which boasts the best keyboard in the netbooking world. You'd think it obvious to stretch it right to the edges woudn't you, but few mini laptops do so. Although it does leave the trackpad a tad on the slim side, it's a much better interface than other competing models. Keeping it high in the rankings is it's price which has dropped significantly over the last few months to around £250-260, far less than the Samsung NC10.

The HP Compaq mini 700 is also available on mobile broadband contract, with Orange and 3, although all in we don't find it as good value on contract as the providers other offerings. For example, on Orange you pay a fiver extra for the Compaq over the Asus Eee PC 901 for the same service - so it'll cost an extra £120 over the duration of the contract.

Overall: 4 stars - previous ranking February 09: #2

and our #1 mini laptop is...

Sony VAIO P Series

The new Sony VAIO P Series mini laptop was unveiled at CES. Sony's new 8 inch, £849 "lifestyle pc" (Sony are vary wary to avoid the term "netbook") is less than 2cm thick and only slightly larger than an office envelope. It comes with a world of features including 3G Mobile Broadband, inbuilt GPS, Windows Vista, battery life of up to 8 hours, SSD storage of up to 128GB and amazingly weighs less than 640g!
